Some Like It Hot
Entrepreneur and Dun & Bradstreet's Sixth Annual Hot 100:
The fastest-growing Entrepreneurial Businesses in America
Entrepreneur Magazine - June 2001
Here at Entrepreneur, we're constantly on the lookout for the hottest new entrepreneurs. Seven years ago, we decided to formalize our search, launching our Annual Hot 100 listing.
With the help of Dun & Bradstreet, the world's leading provider of business information, we spotlight the nation's fastest-growing new entrepreneurial companies each and every year.
So what's new this year? What trends can be spotted in our 7th Annual Hot 100? Despite the much-vaunted dotcom shakeout, technology businesses finished stronger than ever before, with 36 of our 100 finalists in that category, and five of those are Web-based? more than in any previous year. In addition, one company in e-learning, an industry whose potential we've long touted, made the list for the first time.
If there's any doubt in your mind that homes?buying, selling and improving them?are hot, our list will eliminate it. Twenty-four of our Hot 100 companies are involved in construction or residential or commercial interiors. And, for the first time, two real estate companies made our list.
Where there's give, there's take, though. While technology and construction are soaring, fewer general manufacturing companies made our Hot list than in years past.
All told, our 100 finalists generated total sales of $935.4 million last year. How did they do it?and how does your business measure up? To find out, we provide a closer look at two of our finalists, along with a complete listing of all 100. Congratulations, all.

Burn, Baby, Burn
Entrepreneur and Dun & Bradstreet's Sixth Annual Hot 100: The
fastest-growing Entrepreneurial Businesses in America
Entrepreneur Magazine - June 2000
In our 21st century economy, speed is the new prerequisite. Entrepreneurs who don't hit the ground running are often left choking on a cloud of dust. Meanwhile, much of the glory today goes to those who accelerate from $0 to millions faster than you can say IPO.
You could say Entrepreneur was quick to pick up on this trend. five years ago, on the cusp of America's obsession with all things fast, we set out to find the nation's fastest-growing new businesses. With the help of Dun & Bradstreet (D&B), the world's top research-based business information provider, we combed massive databases to find 100 entrepreneurial ventures of all shapes, forms, industries and corners of the country. The common bond: warp speed growth.
Meanwhile, Dun & Bradstreet and Entrepreneur's Hot 100 list has itself seen some changes. In six short years, we've felt the effects of the technological boom and the subsequent superstar status of dotcoms. While our ranking still represents diversity - from toys to construction - you'll notice the increasing presence of tech ventures. What better trend to propel us into 2000?
Of course, these entrepreneurs aren't consumed with just speed. Besides making millions, these men and women introduced innovations, contributed to their communities, improved our lives and had fun in the process. Here's the inside story of a few Hot 100 entrepreneurs, plus a complete ranking of our Sixth Annual Hot 100. We consider this not only a look at today's fastest-growing businesses, but at tomorrow's household names.

Fast, Faster, Fastest
Entrepreneur and Dun & Bradstreet's Sixth Annual Hot 100: The
fastest-growing Entrepreneurial Businesses in America
Entrepreneur Magazine - June 1999
At long last, entrepreneurs have pulled up to the red carpet. If you're the brains, the intuition, the voice behind a new and fast-growing business, you're considered a superstar of the American economy.
Here at Entrepreneur, we were on the lookout for the latest and greatest businesses long before the world in general, and the Silicon Valley in particular, labeled entrepreneurship a craze. Five years ago, we decided to quantify our longtime quest for America's hottest new entrepreneurs. We enlisted the help of Dun & Bradstreet (D&B), the world's top research-based business information provider, and began searching for America's Hot 100 entrepreneurs. It's now one of our most rewarding endeavors - a chance to sneak-preview some of tomorrow's Microsofts and Starbucks.
What did we find this year? It's a tech, tech, tech, tech world. In our final Hot 100 of the millennium, many of the companies (in fact, our top five) are tech-based. Internet companies, which made their first appearance in last year's rankings, continued to score big, while more "old fashioned" tech companies, such as computer wholesalers and retail hardware stores, rose in the ranks.
Less techy, and arguably less sexy firms, including food distributors, a rubber manufacturer and a specialty valve engineering firm, accounted for a respectable portion of the Hot 100. Other businesses that made the cut were just plain cool: a commercial greenhouse manufacturer, a DVD producer and a company that constructs golf courses. Diversity in our Hot 100 isn't restricted to industry - our fast-growing start-ups come from both humble beginnings and big money. Our No. 1 start-up, for example, began with $20,000 and makes more than $100 million today.
But these entrepreneurs are more than just names, numbers, sales and start-up costs. They're people who've poured their entire beings into their businesses. For a look at the businesses - and the beings behind them - we present the following ranking and profiles of a few Hot 100 finalists.
